한국정부는 현재 바이오 제약 산업을 4차 산업혁명의 중요한 부분으로 인식하고 있는데요. 이런 관점에서 향후 바이오 제약 산업의 미래를 어떻게 전망하시나요?

한국 정부는 바이오 제약 산업을 한국 경제와 세계 경제의 중요한 신성장 동력으로 인식하고 있는데요. 이런 측면에서 한국 정부는 바이오 제약 산업을 적극적으로 지원해 왔습니다. 삼성바이오로직스는 이미 세계 최대 바이오 제약 제조 서비스 기업으로 자리매김했습니다. 삼성바이오로직스가 위치한 인천시에서는 단일 도시로는 세계 최대의 제조 능력을 보유하고 있습니다. 바이오 제약 제조능력이 510,000리터로 세계 최대 규모입니다. 국가적인 차원에서 본다면 한국은 미국에 이어 세계 2위의 제조능력을 갖추고 있습니다. 이런 면에서 한국 정부는 매우 적극적으로 바이오 제약 산업을 지원해 왔습니다. 하지만 바이오 제약 산업은 매우 긴 가치사슬을 가지고 있습니다. 여기에는 발견, 연구, 개발, 제조, 마케팅 및 영업이 포함됩니다. 따라서 부가가치 창출의 여지가 많습니다. 또한 바이오 제약 산업은 원료, 세포 배양 매체, 장비, 인프라, 서비스 등 매우 긴 공급망을 가지고 있습니다. 따라서 한국 정부는 앞으로도 저희와 같은 기업들과 협력하여 지속적으로 외국인 투자를 유치하고 한국에 첨단 R&D 시설과 제조 시설을 구축하기 위해 노력할 것으로 생각됩니다.

국내 바이오 제약 산업의 성장을 위해 R&D 지원 이외에도 어떤 정부지원이 더 필요하다고 생각하시나요?

사업 인프라를 강화하는 것이 중요하다고 봅니다.

사업 인프라라고 하면 어떤 예를 들 수 있을까요?

첨단 제조 시설과 물류 시스템, 거주 기반 등을 갖춘 양호한 입지가 필요합니다. 저희는 제조 시설의 건설을 첫 단계로 시행하였지만 매우 긴 가치사슬과 공급망을 고려할 때 국내 시장과 글로벌 시장에서 바이오 제약 산업이 더욱 성장할 수 있는 다양한 사업과 잠재력이 존재합니다.

마지막으로, 삼성바이오로직스의 대표로서 향후 목표와 사업 계획에 대해 말씀해주십시오.

쉽지 않은 길이고 매우 도전적인 사업입니다. 저는 삼성바이오로직스의 지속적인 성장을 위한 막중한 책임감을 느낍니다. 저희는 세계 최대의 CMO 서비스 공급업체로서뿐만 아니라 바이오 제약 산업의 판도를 바꿀 수 있는 기업으로 도약하려는 목표를 가지고 있습니다. 현재 전체 제조의 75%가 사내의 자체 제조 능력과 역량으로 이루어지고 있고 CMO 부분은 25%에 불과합니다. 저희는 고객들에게 품질은 높이면서 가격은 낮춘 제조 서비스를 제공함으로써 CMO의 비중을 현재의 25%에 50%로 높일 수 있다고 자신합니다. 이런 측면에서 저의 역할은 경영진과 직원들을 격려하고 삼성바이오로직스의 시장 점유율을 높이는 동시에 제조 시장과 바이오로직스 시장 자체를 성장시키는 것이라고 생각합니다.

구체적인 시간 계획을 갖고 계시는가요?

<김태한 / 삼성바이오로직스 사장>
시간이 걸리는 문제입니다. 저희는 매년 최선을 다하고 있고 시간이 너무 빠르게 지나가지만 앞으로 5~6년 내에 바이오 제약 산업에 많은 변화가 있을 것으로 예상합니다.

The current South Korean government also sees bio-pharmaceutical business as an important part of the 4th industrial revolution. How do you forecast the global bio-pharmaceutical business?

<Tae-han Kim / CEO of Samsung BioLogics>
I mean Korean government is recognizing Korean pharmaceutical industry as the new growth engine of the global economy as well as the Korean economy. In that sense Korean government has been very supportive for the pharmaceutical industry specifically Samsung biologics became already largest bio-pharmaceutical Manufacturing service company as you know. The Incheon city where Samsung biologics is located has the world's largest manufacturing capacity as a single city. Specifically it has 510 thousand liters of biopharmaceutical manufacturing capacity which is world's largest. Also, country level, Korea already has world's second largest capacity just following the United States. In that sense, Korean government has been very supportive. However, biopharmaceutical has very long value chain, including discovery research development manufacturing marketing and sales. So there are a lot of additional rooms for additional value creation. Also biopharmaceutical business has long supply chain including the raw material Cell culturing media equipment infrastructure services and so on. So I think the Korean government will work with companies like us to continuously attract global investors so that they can build good quality R&D facilities as well as manufacturing facilities in Korea.

What support do you think the government needs to provide in order for the domestic bio-pharmaceutical industry to evolve?

What is important is to reinforce the business infrastructure.

Business infrastructure? For example?

<Tae-han Kim / CEO of Samsung BioLogics>
For example good land with good utility including the good logistic system and good residence system and so on. So again, we started to build manufacturing facility for the first step but considering the long value chain and supply chain there are many different kinds of Businesses and rooms for additional growth of Korean and global biopharmaceutical industry.

Lastly, what are your future aspirations and plans as the CEO of Samsung Biologics?

<Tae-han Kim / CEO of Samsung BioLogics>
It's not easy. It's very challenging. I feel very strong responsibility so that we can continuously grow. Again we have an ambition not only to be the largest CMO service provider but also big game changer in this biopharmaceutical industry specifically currently 75% manufacturing is being covered by in-house manufacturing capacity and capability. The CMO portion is only 25%. We are confident that we can grow the portion of contract manufacturing from current 25% to 50% by providing better quality and cheaper manufacturing services for the clients. In that sense my responsibility is to encourage my management and employees and grow not only the market share Of Samsung BioLogics but also grow the manufacturing market itself as well as the biologics market.

Do you have a specific timeline?

You know it takes time. We try our best every year again time passes very fast but within 5 or 6 years we will see a lot of changes in this bio pharmaceutical industry.
