[윤희영의 News English] 한류 팬들의 한국어 공부 열기

K팝이 한국어 학습 붐을 일으키고 있다(drive boom in Korean language lessons). 무턱대고 따라 부르던(thoughtlessly sing along) 한류 팬들이 이제는 가사 뜻도 이해하고 싶다며(know the meaning of the lyrics) 한국어 공부에 나서면서 인기가 급속히 높아지고 있다(rapidly grow in popularity).

북남미·동남아·중동·아프리카를 가리지 않는다. 인터넷과 유튜브가 한류 열풍을 전혀 예기치 못했던 곳까지 불어넣어(bring its craze to the most unexpected places) 세계 어느 후미진 곳에서도 K팝과 드라마를 접할 수 있게 된(have access to them even in remote out-of-the-way spots) 것이다.

한국어가 외국 팬들의 말하는 방식에도 변화를 가져오고 있다(change the way foreign fans speak). 한 예로 아랍어와 베르베르어를 쓰는 알제리에서는 한류 팬들이 일상 대화에 한국어 단어와 문장을 사용하고 있다(use Korean words and phrases in their daily conversation). 한국어는 쉽지 않아(be far from easy) 배우기 어려운 언어 중 하나로 꼽히는데도(be ranked as one of the hardest languages to learn), 한 설문조사 응답자의 97%가 배우고 싶다 했다. 93%는 매일 대화에 한국어 표현들을 끼워넣어(incorporate Korean expressions in their everyday talks) 쓰고 있다고 답했다.

이들은 한국어 뜻을 공유하기도 한다. 예를 들어 '애교(Aegyo)'는 '천진함을 보이려고(show innocence) 어린애 같은 목소리를 곁들인 귀여운 행동(cute gestures with kind of baby talk)'으로 설명한다. '아이구(Aigoo)'는 '짜증이나 좌절감을 나타내며 내뱉는 말(an utterance to show annoyance or frustration), '아이씨(Aiish)'는 '실망이나 부정적 반응을 보이는 의미 없는 발언(meaningless utterance to show disappointment or negative response)'으로 사용한다.

'보고 싶어(Bogoshipeo)'는 'I miss you', '당연하지(Dang-yeonhaji)'는 'Of course', '하지 마(Hajima)'는 'Do not', '제발(Jebal)'은 'please', '미쳤어(Michyeosseo)'는 'crazy', '예쁘다(Yeppuda)'는 'beautiful', '헐(Hul)'은 '불만이나 거북함을 표현하는(express dissatisfaction or awkwardness) 말'로 대화에 끼워 쓴다.

과장된 것처럼 들릴(sound exaggerated) 수 있다. 하지만 인터넷 보급률이 낮고 한국과 역사적 친밀감도 없었던(with low levels of internet penetration and no historical affinity) 알제리에서도 이런 현상이 나타나고 있음은 한류가 지구 전체로 확산하고(spread across the whole planet) 있음을 단적으로 보여주는(speak volumes about it) 것이다.
