앨버타 대학과 칭화대학(Tsinghua University[http://www.tsinghua.edu.cn/publish/newthuen/ ]) 관계자들은 4월 20일 베이징에서 미래 에너지와 환경을 위한 공동 연구센터를 설립하기로 합의했다. 앨버타 대학은 앨버타 주에서 2번째로 큰 규모의 무역 파트너와의 결속을 강화하고자 라헬 노틀리(Rachel Notley) 수상(Premier)이 주도하는 앨버타 정부 무역 미션의 일환으로 해당 계약을 포함해 중국 파트너들과 다수의 파트너십을 체결했다.

"앨버타 대학은 중국 그리고 칭화대학과 오랜 파트너십을 유지하며 청정에너지, 환경과 기후 변화와 같은 세계적으로 중요한 문제들을 해결하고자 글로벌 인재들을 모은다" 면서 "이러한 협력을 강화하면 더욱 많은 발견이 이루어질 수 있으며 이는 새로운 아이디어와 기술 그리고 혁신들로 이어져 양국은 물론 전 세계에 도움이 될 것이다"고 앨버타 대학의 총장(President)인 데이빗 터핀(David Turpin)은 전했다.

앨버타 대학의 연구 부총장(Vice President)인 래리 코스티크(Larry Kostiuk)는, 앨버타 대학과 칭화대학은 20년 이상 장기적인 협력을 유지해왔으며 미래 에너지와 환경을 위한 공동 연구센터가 가장 최근에 발생한 발전사항이라고 전했다. 또한, 칭화대학은 중국 최고의 연구기관 중 하나이자 전 세계 톱 연구기관 중 하나로 꼽히기도 한다. 2012년 앨버타 대학과 칭화대학은 중국-캐나다 에너지와 환경 연구와 교육계획(Sino-Canadian Energy and Environment Research and Education Initiative[https://www.ualberta.ca/news-and-events/newsarticles/2012/10/leadinguniversitiesteamuponglobalchallenge ])을 실시했으며 청정에너지, 환경, 수자원, 에너지 운송, 정책 분야에서 30개 이상의 파트너십들을 끌어냈다.

래리 코스티크는 해당 새로운 센터가 칭화대학과의 관계를 "완전히 새로운 수준"으로 끌어올렸다고 밝혔다. 연구원들은 에너지, 환경과 기후 변화, 신재생 에너지, 첨단 전력 시스템, 에너지 운송 등과 관련된 다양한 문제들을 해결하기 위해 협력할 것이다

해당 센터는 최첨단 연구시설과 함께 칭화대학에 기반을 둘 예정이다. 일단 운영이 시작되면 해당 센터는 중국 내 전략적 국제 연구센터를 설립하고 있는 중국 교육부(Chinese Ministry of Education)에 보조금을 신청할 수 있다. 해당 센터는 캐나다 대학과 협력으로 만들어진 유일한 센터다.

코스티크는 앨버타 대학의 미래 에너지 시스템 계획(Future Energy Systems initiative[https://www.ualberta.ca/news-and-events/newsarticles/2016/september/ualberta-awarded-75m-for-energy-research ]) 총괄(Director)로서 그 직위를 유지하면서 해당 새롭게 설립된 센터의 부총괄(Deputy Director)도 담당하게 될 예정이다. 해당 계획은 새로운 저탄소 에너지 기술들을 개발하고 증진시키고 이를 현재 인프라에 통합하며 이의 채택에 따른 사회적 경제적 영향들을 이해하기 위해 여러 분야의 연구자들을 하나로 모은다.

코스티크는 앨버타 대학-칭화대학 센터는 에너지와 직접 관련된 문제들을 다룬 미래 에너지 시스템보다 더 광범위한 범위에서 환경과 수자원 문제들을 해결하게 될 것이라고 코스티크는 전했다.

해당 공동 연구센터를 위한 파트너십 외에도, 재활 의학과 교수진(Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine[https://www.ualberta.ca/rehabilitation ])은 중국이 재활역량을 강화 및 확장할 수 있도록 지원하고자 보건 전문가들을 위한 훈련을 개발하기 위해 광화 국제 교육 협회(Guanghua International Education Association)와 MOU를 체결했다.

TEC 에드먼턴(TEC Edmonton[http://www.tecedmonton.com/ ])은 새로운 공동 인큐베이터에서 칭화대학의 연구 혁신 인큐베이터인 투스팍/투스스타(TusPark/TusStar)와 계약을 체결했다. 전 세계에 최대 규모의 대학 과학 파크를 운영하는 투스팍/투스스타(TusPark/TusStar)는 해당 새로운 파트너십을 통해 그 글로벌 영향력을 확장, 에드먼턴과 앨버타에 경제적 기회들을 창출하는 데 기여할 것이다.

UAlberta partners with Chinese researchers on sustainable energy, economic diversification

-- UAlberta partners with top Chinese institution, Tsinghua University, to create Joint Research Centre for Future Energy and Environment during recent Alberta mission.

EDMONTON, Alberta, April 22, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The University of Alberta is teaming up with research partners in China to develop low-carbon, sustainable energy solutions while tackling global environmental challenges.

Officials from the U of A and Tsinghua University [http://www.tsinghua.edu.cn/publish/newthuen/ ] were in Beijing on April 20 to sign an agreement to create the Joint Research Centre for Future Energy and Environment. It was one of several key agreements the U of A signed with Chinese partners as part of a wider Government of Alberta trade mission, led by Premier Rachel Notley, to strengthen ties with the province's second-largest trading partner.

"The University of Alberta values our long-standing partnerships with China and Tsinghua University, which bring together world-leading talent to address globally important issues such as clean energy, environment and climate change," said U of A President David Turpin. "Strengthening these collaborations will open even more avenues of discovery and lead to new ideas, technologies and innovations that will benefit both countries and the world."

Larry Kostiuk, the U of A's associate vice-president of research, said the Joint Research Centre for Future Energy and Environment is the latest evolution in more than two decades of collaborations between the U of A and Tsinghua University-arguably China's best research institution and among the top in the world. In 2012, the U of A and Tsinghua created the Sino-Canadian Energy and Environment Research and Education Initiative [https://www.ualberta.ca/news-and-events/newsarticles/2012/10/leadinguniversitiesteamuponglobalchallenge ], which has led to more than 30 partnerships in clean energy, environment, water, energy transport and policy.

Kostiuk said the new centre elevates relations with Tsinghua to a "completely new level." Researchers will collaborate on a range of problems related to energy, environment and climate change, renewable energy, advanced power systems, energy transport and more.

"This is a rare opportunity for a Canadian university to partner with Tsinghua University in such a significant way," said Kostiuk, who was in China for the signing. "We come from different places and backgrounds, but we're going to come together and leverage our different perspectives to solve common problems."

The centre will be based at Tsinghua in a state-of-the-art research facility. Once operational, the centre will be able to apply for grant funding through the Chinese Ministry of Education, which is establishing strategic international research centres across the country. This centre would be the only one created in partnership with a Canadian university.

Kostiuk will serve as the new centre's deputy director while retaining his position as director of U of A's Future Energy Systems initiative [https://www.ualberta.ca/news-and-events/newsarticles/2016/september/ualberta-awarded-75m-for-energy-research ], which brings together researchers across disciplines to improve and develop new low-carbon energy technologies, integrate them into today's infrastructure and understand the social and economic impacts of their adoption.

Kostiuk said the U of A-Tsinghua centre will be even broader in scope than Future Energy Systems, addressing environment and water issues not necessarily tied to energy.

Partnerships boost economic diversification, training

In addition to the joint research centre, the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine [https://www.ualberta.ca/rehabilitation ] signed a memorandum of understanding with Guanghua International Education Association to develop training for health professionals that will help China enhance and expand rehabilitation capacity.

TEC Edmonton [http://www.tecedmonton.com/ ] signed an agreement with Tsinghua University's research innovation incubator, TusPark/TusStar, on a new joint incubator. TusPark/TusStar operates the largest university science park in the world, and the new partnership would expand its global reach, creating economic opportunities for Edmonton and Alberta.
