[ML스카우트의 메이저스토리] 이대호가 개막 로스터에 진입할 확률

개인적으로, 나는 이대호에게 박수를 쳐주고 싶다. 그는 2016시즌 소프트뱅크와 500만 달러짜리 계약을 할 수 있었다. 하지만 지금은 시애틀 매리너스 1군 로스터에 들어가야만 인센티브까지 다 합쳐서 최대 400만 달러를 받을 수 있다. 그러나 400만 달러를 받을 수 있는 것도 ‘만에 하나’라는 가정 하의 일이다.

한국의 슬러거 이대호가 더 늦어지기 전에 미국에서 뛰고 싶어한다는 사실을 모두가 알고 있었다. 그러나 자신이 메이저리그에서 뛴다는 보장도 없이 큰 돈을 포기하고 미국으로 가는 건 절대 쉬운 일이 아니었을 거라고 확신한다. 이대호는 이제 매리너스 선수고, 스프링캠프에서 25인 로스터에 들어가는 경쟁을 하게 됐다.

이대호는 지난 시즌 일본프로야구에서 141경기에 출장해 타율 0.282 출루율 0.368 장타율 0.524 홈런 31개 타점 98개를 기록했다. 올 시즌 그는 애덤 린드(시애틀)의 플래툰 자리를 놓고 경쟁을 할 것으로 보인다.

린드는 메이저리그에서 우투수를 상대로 타율 0.293  OPS 0.863을 기록했지만, 좌투수를 상대로 타율 0.213 OPS 0.586을 기록하며 약점을 보였다. 이 때문에 시애틀은 오프시즌을 통해 린드의 플래툰 파트너를 찾기 위해 노력했고, 주요 후보는 이대호와 포수에서 1루수로 포지션을 전환한 헤수스 몬테로다.

타격에서 최고의 유망주로 평가를 받고 있는 몬테로는 26살의 나이로 더 이상 마이너리그 옵션이 없는 상황이다. (시애틀과 몬테로의 계약 내용에 따르면, 시애틀 구단이 몬테로를 마이너리그로 내려보낼 수 있는 기간을 이미 다 소진했다. 앞으로 몬테로는 1군 로스터에 있거나, 아니면 한 번 더 마이너리그로 강등될 경우 타팀 이적이 가능해진다- 역자 주)

지난 시즌 몬테로는 타율 0.355 OPS 0.966을 기록하며 트리플-A를 강타했다. 그러나 마이너리그에서의 성공은 메이저리그까지 이어지지 못했고, 몬테로는 시애틀 소속으로 38경기에 출장해 타율 0.233 홈런 5개 타점 19를 기록하는 데 그쳤다. 이와 함께 몬테로는 수비에서 평균 이하의 1루수로 평가를 받고 있는데, 땅볼 처리에 미숙함을 보였기 때문이다.

만약 이대호의 유력한 경쟁자가 헤수스 몬테로가 된다면, 구단에서 그에게 더 이상 마이너리그 옵션을 사용할 수 없다는 것은 작년 일본시리즈 최우수선수인 이대호에게 가장 나쁜 소식이 될 것이다. 스프링트레이닝에서 이대호와 몬테로가 비슷한 수준의 역량을 보여준다면 구단에서 몬테로에게 더 큰 호의를 보여줄 것이기 때문이다.

현지의 소식통에 의하면 이대호를 영입하기 위해 시애틀과 볼티모어가 관심을 보였다고 한다. 그러나 볼티모어는 크리스 데이비스와의 재계약이 확정된 이후 이대호와의 협상을 중단했다. 아마 이대호에게 있어 시애틀은 유일한 협상 파트너였을 것이다.

이대호가 스프링트레이닝에서 헤수스 몬테로를 꺾고 우타 1루수 플래툰의 자리를 차지할 수 있을까? 물론 가능하다. 그러나 만약 내가 현 시점 둘 중 어떤 선수가 경쟁의 우위에 있냐 추측해야 한다면, 몬테로가 개막전 25인 로스터에 합류한다는 쪽에 돈을 걸겠다.

Personally, I would like to applaud Lee Dae-Ho, who would’ve made around million from Softbank if he had stayed there for 2016 season. He’s expected to make up to million if he reaches certain incentives with the Mariners now, and that is a big “if”.

It is not a secret the Korean slugger wanted the chance to play in the big leagues before it was too late. I am sure it was not easy giving up guaranteed money and coming over to the States without an assurance if he would play in the Majors. However, he is now a Mariner, and will be given a chance to compete for a spot on the 25-man roster in spring training.

Lee, 33, put up a .282/.368/.524 line with 31 home runs and 98 RBIs in 141 games last year in NPB. The first baseman will likely compete for a spot as a platoon to Adam Lind, who has made a career out of hitting right-handed pitchers to the tune of a .293 average and .863 OPS, compared to .213 and .586 vs. lefties. Thus, the Mariners will almost certainly try to find a platoon partner, and top candidates are Lee Dae-Ho and Jesus Montero, a converted first baseman from a catcher.

Once regarded as one of the best hitting prospects, Montero is now 26, and is out of Minor League options. Montero destroyed Triple-A pitching in 2015 with a .355 average and .966 OPS last year, hitting 18 homers and 85 RBIs in 98 games. However, the success did not translate to the Majors as he hit only .223 with five homers and 19 RBIs in 38 games with Seattle. He is also considered as a below average defender at first as he is still adjusting to taking ground balls.

With Lee Dae-Ho’s biggest competition, Jesus Montero, being out of Minor League options is a bad news for the former Japan Series MVP as the organization will likely favor Montero to make the team if they both play at a similar level in spring training.

According to multiple sources, Seattle and Baltimore showed some interest in Lee Dae-Ho before he settled with the Mariners. The Orioles however, stopped negotiations with Lee’s agent after completing a deal with Chris Davis. Therefore, the Mariners probably were the only option Lee Dae-Ho and his agent being offered.

Is it possible for Lee Dae-Ho to showcase his skills in spring and beat out Jesus Montero for the right-handed platoon at first? Yes, but if I had to guess right now, I would bet my money on Montero to make the 25-man roster on the opening day.
